We have been selected as a 2024 AARP Community Challenge Grantee!
The Grahamtown Team is thrilled to announce we have been selected to receive a 2024 AARP Community Challenge grant. We are one of only 343 grantees selected (out of 3,300+ applications!) from across all 50 states, Washington D.C, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
With this quick-action grant we will provide “eating and seating” in the Grahamtown community. Our project will provide benches and tables throughout the Grahamtown Community for our seniors to enjoy our community. You will find increased seating at Hardin Park, the Grahamtown Community Garden and along Hardin Road near the upcoming community green space.
“We are incredibly proud that AARP selected the Grahamtown Team for this investment to make the Grahamtown community more livable for residents of all ages,” stated Kisha McDowell, Executive Director of the Grahamtown Team. “AARP is a nationwide leader in making communities more livable and we are honored that they see the tangible value this project will bring to our area.”
About the AARP Community Challenge
The AARP Community Challenge grant program funds innovative, quick-action projects that inspire change in areas such as public places; housing; transportation; digital connectivity; community resilience; and more. With additional funding support provided by Toyota Motor North America, the program is also increasing its investment in pedestrian safety projects that will improve streets and sidewalks, create vibrant pedestrian infrastructure, engage community members and much more.
This is all part of AARP’s nationwide work on livable communities, which supports the efforts of neighborhoods, towns, cities and counties across the country to become great places for all. AARP believes that communities should provide safe, walkable streets; affordable and accessible housing and transportation options; access to needed services; and opportunities for residents to participate in community life.

"Gussie Mae stumbled onto the Warren Farm in the hills of North Carolina. She was tired, broke down, and needed a place to make a new start. Chad Warren, owner of Warren Farm, provides Gussie Mae shelter in return for labor. When it is discovered Gussie Mae has powers to heal the sick with herbs and roots, she is soon bestowed the title "Root Woman." Gussie Mae becomes a critical part of the Warren family life along with many other farm workers. The story of Gussie Mae in "Cracked Wheat" is sure to leave you with tremendous anticipation of what will occur next."

The Grahamtown Team (GTeam) is an organization made up of citizens from Rutherford County who have an interest in serving our community. The GTeam is focused on the Grahamtown Neighborhood located within Forest City, NC.
It is the responsibility of this team to provide programs and services that support the development and healthy living of individuals within this community and Rutherford County as a whole.
The GTeam was established more than 16 years ago and has contributed greatly to the Grahamtown Neighborhood. The team has collaborated with the Town of Forest City to modify homes and clean up the Grahamtown area. The GTeam has hosted multicultural events to foster awareness and we continue to focus on creating opportunities that produce healthy living and learning. The GTeam sponsors the community garden on Gypsy Street as one of our healthy living programs where individuals and families can grow organic and healthy produce. We also sponsor healthy living classes and learning opportunities for students and adults.
The GTeam is led by professionals, farmers, and individuals that want to support our healthy living, education, and youth in Rutherford County. It is our desire to see a healthy change in the people, the youth and our neighborhood.
The GCC houses a technology center that is used for presentations, meetings, movie nights, computer classes, community events, and great times. Managed by the GTeam, the community center offers opportunities for healthy living programs, small groups, birthday parties, baby showers, youth activities and more.
The Grahamtown Community Center is an open and available resource for our community to utilize for events, find resources, gain knowledge, learn new technology, and to be a part of our the Grahamtown community.
The Grahamtown Center can be used as a place to tell everyone about your business and your products.
Whatever the occasion, the community center is a great place.

The Community Garden is a healthy component of the Grahamtown Team organization. The garden is located in the heart of Grahamtown and all are welcome to come and learn about the garden or even purchase a gardening bed to grow their own crops for a small fee of $25 annually. If you would like to plant year round and you are interested in acquiring a bed in the Hoop House, the cost is only $35. The Hoop House is properly ventilated for the summer and winter months allowing for great crops. The GTeam works with community partners such as RHI Legacy, Rutherford County Schools and students to plant, grow and harvest fresh organic fruits and vegetables. In 2019, the Grahamtown offered the Grahamtown community individual garden plots that they could have in their own yards in an effort to get children and families to begin growing healthy produce in their own yard. This program was sponsored by RHI Legacy of Rutherford County.
